About MeOver 2000 fragments of window glass, many painted like this example, have been excavated from the site of the Carmelite friary, the Green, Aberdeen. Most date from the 13th and 14th centuries and were found in the vicinity of the church.

Most of the designs are consistent with 'grisaille' decoration popular in the 13th and 14th centuries: linear, curvilinear and ring-and-dot motifs with some areas of cross-hatching.

Little is known about the Scottish glass industry, but much was made in Suffolk and Staffordshire. It is not known where the Aberdeen Carmelite glass was made, but the painting and cutting may have been done on site.
