About MeBorn Grangemouth 1920. Studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1937-40. Served in Royal Artillery 1940-46 and developed strong interest in poetry and jazz music. Travelled throughout Europe 1947-48. From late 1940s developed gestural, abstract style, related to American Abstract Expressionism, but has subsequently developed an art uniquely his own. Has exhibited regularly with Gimpel Fils Gallery, London, from 1950 and has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout the world, including retrospectives at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1958; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam,1962; Musée d'Art Contemporatian, Montreal,1970; McLellan Galleries, Glasgow,1992. His work is represented in the world's major museums. Lives in Hertfordshire and Cornwall. From: Contemporary British Art in Print
