About MeAlan Davie first visited St. Ives in the late fifties when he stayed with Patrick Heron. Later he rented a cottage in West Penwith before buying a property near Land's End where he spent the summer months.

Yet Davie's work stands in marked contrast to the subtle sensibilities and considered forms of Nicholson's or Heron's work at this time. In 1948 Davie travelled to Paris with Gear and quickly absorbed what he had seen of Expressionist painting. Soon, he was creating enigmatic works which were based on intuition rather than observed motifs.
