About MeThe Great Exhibition of 1851, conceived by Albert, the Prince Consort, symbolised the industrial, military and economic superiority of Victorian Britain and the Empire. It was held in Hyde Park in London in the specially constructed Crystal Palace, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, to showcase over 13,000 exhibits. Dyce was appointed a judge at the Exhibition and designed the diploma certificates issued to successful exhibitors.

The heading of the certificate features a winged female figure of Peace, bearing two olive branch wreathes and flanked beneath by personifications of Industry and Science. The central motif of Peace is stylised to achieve a symmetrical figure design. Whilst the auxiliary figures are perfectly in harmony with the overall design, Dyce has treated them with greater sculptural form.
