About MeThis painting shows St Sunniva (I) built in 1887 at the Hall Russell shipyard, Aberdeen for the North of Scotland & Orkney & Shetland Steam Navigation Company. The North Company had launched a summer Norwegian cruise programme in 1886. This proved so successful that they ordered a new vessel, St Sunniva, purpose-built for cruising.
St Sunniva operated Norwegian cruises, as well as round Britain tours. The vessel was also chartered for at least one Mediterranean cruise. By 1908, the North Company faced stiff competition in the cruise market and St Sunniva was withdrawn and refitted for service closer to home. Until wrecked in 1930, the vessel sailed between Leith, Aberdeen and Lerwick.
