About MeHull's Mill, near Castle Hedingham in Essex, appears in several watercolours and wood engravings by Ravilious. In 1936, a close-up version of this image, focussing on the horse and mill, featured in a 'Country Walks' booklet, issued by London Transport in 1936.

The naïve handling, with its outsized horse and 'dolls house' buildings, transforms a rather prosaic and ugly building into a scene of quaint and aesthetically pleasing appeal.

More About Me

Ravilious produced more than 400 engravings during his career, including illustrations for well-known works such as Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
