About MeJoan Hassall was born in London and studied there at the Royal Academy Schools. Her first commissioned illustration was to engrave the title page of her brother Christopher Hassall's books of poems "Devil's Dyke" (1936). She also illustrated works by Austen, Trollope and Mrs Gaskell. Hasall's works display her skilled draughtsmanship combined with a delicate sensibility. This print depicts Belgrave Crescent, one of the finest streets in Edinburgh's west end. Printed beneath the image is an inscription:
Mabel and Robert Lyon
1 Belgrave Crescent
Edinburgh 4
telephone:25502.
indicating that this print was designed as a personal note card or change of address card.
