About MeThe plate is signed RHL van Rijn f. on the rock to the right of Christ. This is Rembrandt’s first large format print and was subject to much re-working through several stages or states. Hugely ambitious, it marks the beginning of his application of a painterly chiaroscuro to the prints. He creates a heightened sense of drama through the strong contrast of light and darkness. The scene depicts the moment when Christ summons Lazarus from his tomb.
Impressions from this plate have continued to be taken from its creation in 1632 right through to the 21st century, with the publication of the so-called Millenium Impressions, printed in 2003. This particular example is a late impression, probably printed in the 19th century.
