About MeThis is a 19th copy, possibly by Armand Durand, after Rembrandt's famous "Hundred Guilder Print" (given this name because it once achieved this record price.)Rembrandt created his etching in the 1640's, finally completing the plate around 1649. It was regarded as a "tour de force", applying many new technical advances. Most noteworthy, was the varying degree of finish across the plate, from the lightly worked figures on the left to the highly worked area on the right.
By the 1800's Rembrandt's etching plates were worn and in poor condition. Armand Durand, a distinguished engraver, dedicated the major part of his life to recreating Rembrandt's 347 etchings in exacting detail. Durand's copies were so well respected they were purchased by major collectors throughout Europe, including the Louvre and the Biblioteque Nationale.
