About MeSgt Peppers comes to the Gas Board.

This is one of numerous leaflets produced for the public to explain and 'convert' them to the benefits of North Sea gas in the late 1960's and 1970's. The optimism of the times is evident in the imagery used.

Until the North Sea gas deposits were exploited Britain relied upon gas extracted from coal for production of gas. This 'town gas' was very polluting both in use and creation, emitting large amounts of sulphur as well as carbon. By contrast although still polluting the 'natural gas' was estimated to entail less than half the emission levels.
