About MeThe cake basket with its pierced scroll design and finely worked pattern of scrolls, flowers, foliage and stylised sea shells illustrates Dempster's craftsmanship and technical skills. The hinged handle arches from the mouths of two mythological creatures - a striking example of ornate silver work when many goldsmiths confined themselves to working with plainer, unadorned shapes. These baskets are relatively rare, and were used for serving cake, sweetmeats or fruit, as newer varieties were introduced during the 18th century.
