About MeDonald Dinnie (1837–1916) was a Scottish strongman, born at Balnacraig, Birse, near Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. Dinnie's athletic career spanned over 50 years, and over 11,000 successful competitions. This carved pine sculpture depicts Donald Dinnie, dressed in kilt and sporran and wearing a sash decorated with gilt embellished medallions. The figure was carved by G. Robinson of Newcastle and presented to Dinnie in Newcastle in 1870 by his 'Scottish friends', in appreciation of his athletic achievements.

The sculptor, Gerrard Robinson was the son of a Newcastle blacksmith. He left school at 13 and was apprenticed to a wood carver, Thomas Tweedy. In the 1860s he established his reputation by making a massive Chevy Chase sideboard which he carved in his spare time. He then went to London where he produced sideboards on themes such as Robinson Crusoe, Robin Hood and Derby Day. In 1866 he returned to the North East, where this work was carved, dying in 1891.
