When exploring new areas, after all the basic survey and seismic work has indicated likely reservoirs, the only way to find out for sure is to drill often thousands of metres under the seabed.
There is no guarantee that even if the borehole does show the presence of oil or gas, that they will be there in sufficient quantity to make it commercially viable.
Usually a number of boreholes are made in order to try and see the extent of any reservoir.
This bottle contains oil from an exploration well drilled in 1985 in the Heidrun Field in the North Sea. On the 10th June 1985, after 103 days drilling the well reached 3262m depth. However, despite the presence of oil it wasn't thought that there was sufficient amount to be economic to recover it. The well was then plugged and abandoned.
