About MeLong after her death Burns' muse Mary Campbell continued to haunt his conscience and in 1789, after eighteen months of marriage to Jean Armour, he composed the poem now called 'To Mary in Heaven', in which he appeals to the spirit of Mary:
"See'st thou thy lover lowly laid?
Hear'st thou the groans that rend his breast?"
'We feel constrained to say, "If this is not the language of remorse, what is it?"'

It is this later work by Burns that the contemporary Scottish artist June Redfern was inspired by when creating her series of prints entitled Mary in Heaven. They were first commissioned for a group show "For a' That - contemporary artists look at Burns" - a project developed by the Maclaurin Art Gallery in Ayr in 1989.
