About MeRayner was brought up in the South East of Scotland, in the fishing towns of North Berwick and Dunbar. He worked as a merchant seaman for many years before studying drawing and painting at Dundee Art College. Rayner has subsequently become interested in sculpture, but the painter in him, is still clearly evident in the brightly coloured forms of this work. It is carved in a manner reminiscent of ship's figure-heads. The main theme is the sea and there are various nautical references such as sailors, wind and sun motifs, fish and ship's cats.

Rayner was in the merchant navy before studying art in Dundee. This piece, decorated with various nautical themes, is a bit like a ship’s figurehead.
