About MeRavilious was commissioned as a War Artist in 1939 and assigned to the Admiralty with whom he was appointed Captain Royal Marines.

Posted to 'HMS Dolphin', Gosport, in 1940 he began to draw submarine interiors, from which he produced a set of ten lithographs. This work however focuses on various exterior views of submarines: images of a hull with pennant number 54 and a large propeller dominate the foreground.

More About Me
War artist Eric Ravilious drew the submarines and submariners at Gosport. Here we can see underwater the hidden parts of submarines, the bulbous hull, enormous propellers and cramped internal spaces.
