About MeThe bride and groom met during World War Two and wed in Wales in September 1946. The groom served in the Black Watch and was from Aberdeen. The couple moved to the city immediately after their honeymoon.

From 1941, cloth and clothing were rationed under the British Government’s Utility Scheme. Brides often married in uniform or two-piece suits due to shortages of material for a traditional wedding dress. These suits usually featured a straight skirt and a semi-fitted jacket with padded shoulders. Britain, burdened with national debt, remained in the grip of austerity. Cloth and clothing were in short supply and clothes rationing remained in place until 15 March 1949.

This suit was made by the bride’s neighbour, who was a dressmaker. It was worn with a short, black tulle veil attached to a blue headdress decorated with blue feathers.
