About MeSamuel John Peploe had returned to Edinburgh by 1897 having studied in Paris and travelled through France over the previous few years. He was yet, however, to assimilate the colours and experiments of the Post-Impressionists into his works. At this point, he was a great admirer of the Dutch artist Frans Hals and the Spaniard Diego Velazquez. The dark background and muted colours of Still Life, Painter's Materials may not just be a result of Peploe's influences. He was working in a dark studio in Edinburgh at this time and he preferred a minimal light in order that he might accurately pick out the tones of the highlights and shadows on his objects.
More About Me
Was Samuel Peploe attempting to break the fourth wall with this painting: a painter painting painter's materials?
