Pauline's work also makes an interesting comparison and support to works in the collection by Ian Fleming (1906-1994) who moved to Aberdeen like Pauline, in the 1950s. Both are printmakers working in a traditional way, with evident mastery of technical skills, and the collection would benefit from the opportunity to see the work of these two artists side by side.
The Gallery already has one work by Jacobsen, but this is a very early work, executed over thirty years ago and is very different in style and imagery. In "Snow" we see the work of a mature artist who has developed her own style. What sets Pauline apart from other printmakers is the way in which she uses the textures of the wood in her images. She follows the line of the grain, emphasising and manipulating the sinuous lines. This can be seen in "Snow", where the grain is cleverly used to evoke swirling snow.
