About MeE. A. Walton is rightly regarded as one of Scotland's finest painters, particularly in watercolour, a medium in which he excelled. As one of The Glasgow Boys he took on board many stylistic influences from French Realist Art and most particularly the work of Jules Bastien Lepage (1848-1884) who is represented in our collections by one of his finest works, 'Going to School'.

With its high horizon, steeply sloping ground, sheep seen in profile and strident colours 'The Young Shepherd' looks forward to The Boys movement towards a more decorative, rather than a purely Realist style, which was to become very much a feature of their art as the 19th century drew to a close.
