About MeScottish painter Ian Fleming studied at Glasgow School of Art, specialising in engraving, colour woodcuts and lithography but he was also a very talented painter in watercolours. He taught at Glasgow School of Art and from 1954-71 was Principal of Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. As a 2nd Lieutenant in the Pioneer Corps Fleming travelled into Europe with the allied troops as they liberated the Netherlands and captured Germany. In these theatres of war, his drawing materials were never far from hand. Here we see the aftermath: a gun post amid the rubble of a shelled building, silent and unmanned now that war is over.
More About Me
Often donning his watercolours when not fighting on the front-line, Fleming captured the harrowing realities of WW2 from a first-hand perspective. Here he denotes the eeriness of dust settling on a battlefield.
