Norman Mathieson

About MeMathieson’s work is characterised by his exploration of shape and composition, often constructing pictures in a linear way with flat areas of colour. The focus shifts within these works, usually drawing upon everyday images such as buildings and still-lifes, with increasing concentration on the construction of the final print or painting. After developing his printmaking practice through a residency in Nagasawa, Japan, the artist’s work became more structured compositionally; the flat and abstract pictures of his previous work gave way to more representational but thoughtful arrangements in subtle earthy tones.

Norman Mathieson studied at Glasgow School of Art and then at Duncan of Jordanstone. After graduating in 1993, he has had various teaching roles as well as more hands-on appointments, working as Studio Printer and Workshop Manager for Glasgow Print Studio.
