About MeShe was the daughter of Alexander Allan, owner of the Allan Shipping Line, which made her a very wealthy woman. She was also part of a family of committed socialists. In May 1902 she was a founder member of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Association of Women's Suffrage. From 1903 she represented the Association on the committee of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS).
