About MeMay Baird’s talents as a doctor and social pioneer enabled her to act as a powerful influencer. She was elected to Aberdeen Town Council in 1938 and became the first woman to hold the position of Chair of a regional hospital board in 1947.
Graduating in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1924, May Tennent, as she was then known, worked in junior positions in local hospitals before marrying fellow student Dugald Baird. In 1937 the couple moved to Aberdeen where May’s desire to reduce the hardships experienced by the poorest and most neglected in society drew her into public life. The following year she was elected as a Labour Party councillor for Aberdeen Town Council and soon became Chair of its Public Health Committee.
In 1947 May became the first woman Chair of the North Eastern Regional Hospital Board overseeing enormous change just as the National Health Service was launched. Together with her husband, May established the first free family planning clinic in Aberdeen. From 1965 to 1971, she also held the role of National Governor of the BBC in Scotland.
