Jon S Baird

Aberdeen, Scotland, born 1972
About MeIdentity has always been a strong theme running through Jon S Baird’s work. Growing up in Peterhead within a family who spoke Doric he says being able to converse in the North-East’s dialect helped shape his own character. It took many years of hard graft before he entered the world of film, where particular highlights include working with Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Danny Boyle.

At the age of 40, Jon won Best New Director (BAFTA Scotland) for his film Filth starring James McAvoy, based on the best-selling novel by Irvine Welsh. He recalls: “Filth was extremely difficult to finance, due to Irvine Welsh’s edgy source material, therefore for it to do well, both critically and commercially, made all those years of hard work well worthwhile.”
