DescriptionA pit and a small amount of 13th-14th century pottery recorded in excavation by Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in 1986. The dangerous condition and subsequent demolition of a listed frontage at 42 Upperkirkgate (NJ90NW0291), in 1986, afforded a rare opportunity to examine a frontage site on Upperkirkgate. Natural subsoil almost directly below floor level was overlain by a thin layer (circa 3cm to 5cm) of medieval occupation. A pit, located near the frontage, circa 1m in diameter and circa 1m deep, had a circa 5cm layer of thick red clay lining the bottom. A small amount of 13th to 14th- century pottery was recovered. The finds from this site are in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.Location InfoNational Grid Reference: NJ 9412 0642
