Gallery 11 - Gallery of Memories
Gallery of Memories
The displays in this space share local people’s experiences relating to war and conflict. It is a place for reflection.
This gallery will show changing displays based on stories and memories that have been shared with us by the people of Aberdeen. The displays will evolve as we gather more memories.
The contributions are shared through digitised personal objects, such as photographs and letters, on touch screen tablets. Many of the memories are about family members, some of whom are no longer here to tell their own stories. The display cases show objects which related to the themes of war and conflict.
The First World War
2018 is the centenary of the end of the First World War. Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914. The Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918.
The First World War cost more than 9 million lives and left behind a legacy of political change, economic hardship and social dislocation. The impact of the conflict was felt in every part of the country including Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland, in many different ways. Among these were individual and shared experiences of camaraderie, separation and loss.
This display explores the different ways we honour those who served in the First World War. The memories collected here have been generously given by their families.
