General History:
25/08/1870:
WRECK OF A SUNDERLAND BARQUE. On Friday evening, Messrs. M. Lonie and Co., j shipbrokers, &c., Exchange-buildings, Sunderland, received a telegram from Cuxhaven, dated Friday, [22 July] 10.25 a.m.,conveying the information that the barque BEN MUICK DHUI had stranded on the Schaarholm, at the mouth of the Elbe, and become a total wreck. Captain Robert Wilkinson and the crew were saved and landed at Cuxhaven. The BEN MUICK DHUI belonged to Messrs. Lonie and Co., and left this port coal-laden for Hamburg, on Saturday week. The disaster was undoubtedly caused by the increased danger of navigation induced by the removal of the beacons and buoys at the mouth of the Elbe. [due to the Franco-Prussian war]
