On 28 September 1916 the LOCH RYAN was captured off the Tyne by U-64 and taken to Germany as a prize of war. The Scarborough crew were made prisoners. The LOCH RYAN was used, without being renamed, by the German Navy as an auxiliary. Her designation was "Kriegshilfsschiff B”; German records give her as sunk in the North Sea 21 February 1917.
