About MeThe sitter, Anne Homan-Mulock, was the daughter of Thomas Homan-Mulock. She married Arthur Challis Kennard, son of Robert William Kennard and Mary Ann Challis, on 27 February 1866. They lived at Eaton Place, London and had four children Nina, Arthur, Howard and Hester. Mrs Kinnard died on 29 March 1926.

This photograph was taken by Millais' friend Rupert Potter (father of Beatrix Potter) and was deliberately over-exposed so that Millais could easily add changes to his composition and subsequently amend the finished painting. His pen and ink pentimenti are clearly visible on the photograph.
