About MeIn 1905, Peploe moved to a new studio at 32 York Place in Edinburgh - previously the studio of the great 19th century portrait painter, Sir Henry Raeburn. This early part of his career is often referred to as his 'white period'. In a clear acknowledgement of the impact of Whistler, he focused on tonal values and the physical texture of the paint. The portraiture of Peploe's friend Robert Brough and Brough's mentor, John Singer Sargent, were also of significance to Peploe's paintings of the white period, evident in the sweeping, fluid brushwork and single figure subjects.
More About Me
Samuel John Peploe was one of four painters who came to be known as the Scottish Colourists. Their popularity was, in part, due to their simple, vibrant, and bold colours.
