About MeJoseph Farquharson is now famed for his magnificent winter subjects. This small painting, however, is an extremely rare example of Farquharson's summer scenes and reveals the influence of the American artist John Singer Sargent on his Scottish friend. At the age of twelve Sargent had taken painting lessons with Farquharson in Murren, Switzerland. They stayed in touch, Sargent visiting Farquharson's Aberdeenshire home on at least one occasion.
The bright colours, elegant feminine subject and depiction of an easy, privileged life in this study all contrast sharply with Farquharson's earlier work, but typify the subjects favoured by Sargent throughout the 1880's and 1890's, when this painting was most probably executed.
