About MeAlexander Mann studied at Glasgow School of Art before moving to Paris, where he studied under Carolus Duran. It was in Paris that he came to admire the art of French painters, such as Jules Bastien Lepage and Adolphe Monticelli. In admiration of them Mann soon came to reject the storytelling themes of Victorian art. He too began to paint ordinary people in everyday settings.
In 1882, the same year that Bastien Lepage painted 'Going to School', Alexander Mann spent the summer at Collieston and it was during this visit to the North-East coastline that he painted this work, in nearby Forvie. In style and subject matter it can be compared to Bastien Lepage's study of childhood which it resembles closely in tone and mood.
