About MeKatherine Dowson graduated from the Royal College of Art, London in 1992, where she held the Princess of Wales Scholarship. She began to use glass in her work in 1989 being attracted by its transparent and delicate qualities. In 'Light Box 1,' the artist fuses botany and anatmoy to create forms which are at once plant-like and human organ-like. For Example, a fungal flower cast from seaweed and covered with small nodules is transformed into the lining of the stomach. From this organ, a glass column dipped in wax represents the intestines. Placed in a light box behind glass the piece is reminiscent of a specimen in a biology lab. It is both sensual and grotesque, beautiful yet disquieting.

More About Me
Dowson, who studied at the Royal College of Art, juxtaposes the worlds of science and medicine, constructing forms that often rely on translucency for their effect
