About MeThe acquisition of these pieces is an interesting story, as they were salvaged from the iron-screw steamship City of Aberdeen after she was wrecked at Portlethen, near Aberdeen, on 20th January 1871. The ship was built on the Clyde in 1865 for the Aberdeen Steam Navigation Company Ltd. The grandfather of the donor's husband bought the items at the original salvage auction on 30th January 1871 and they were taken to Australia when the family emigrated. The donor felt it appropriate that the coffee pot and cream jug should be preserved in Aberdeen and they were returned from Australia in 2009. The broad, heavy bases indicate that they were designed for use at sea. They date to the period between 1865 and 1871.
