General History:
04/08/1827:
Launch of handsome schooner GARLAND from building yard of Mr. Thornton.
(Caledonian Mercury)
12/12/1832:
"To be sold by public roup 4 January in Lemon Tree Tavern 1/16 of schooner GARLAND" (ditto. 30/01/1833, roup, 1 February).
(Aberdeen Journal)
19/11/1851:
"Schooner GARLAND for sale in Lemon Tree Tavern 21 November. The GARLAND is 88 tons register, about 150 tons burthen, thus carrying a large cargo for her tonnage. Is a very handy vessel, shifts without and requires little ballast and is well found. Her sails and rigging are in excellent order. Vessel may be inspected where she now lies at Trinity Quay, Aberdeen."
(Aberdeen Journal)
28/05/1852:
"Captain Taylor, of the LUCK'S ALL of Hull, reports having fallen in with the GARLAND of Aberdeen, dismasted during a gale from the w.s.w., about sixteen miles north of Cromer, at nine a.m. of the 14th instant, but was unable to take her in tow, in consequence of the heavy sea. The master of the GARLAND reported his vessel tight"
(Montrose, Arbroath and Brechin review; and Forfar and Kincardineshire advertiser.)
Note: Aberdeen Register has the GARLAND as Hermaphrodite brig, in this context Hermaphrodite means it has an irregular sail plan between two types. It is usually given as a schooner in Lloyd's.
by 1862 the date built in the Post Office directory has become 1847 instead of 1827 which it was in the 1859 edition, but with the tonnage and the owner the same. This may indicate that it was a new vessel but it seems more likely to be an error that was then perpetuated.
