About MeLittle is known about this instrument and the origins of its name, 'the Maiden', are obscure. It is believed to have been used on Heading Hill, and comprises an iron blade weighted by large pieces of lead. In 1596 Aberdeen Burgh accounts reveal that 25 shillings were paid to George Annand, wright, to sharpen the blade, mend the garrone (scaffold), buy tow (gallows' rope) and 'saip for the tow' (soap for the rope), carry 'her' to the hill and then back to the close of the Earl Marischal's house. In 1604 one Robert Guild was sentenced to have his 'heid tane aff' for the murder of William Blair on Broad Street. Guild also had his right hand cut off which had 'comitit the fact [murder]', the hand was then displayed in the Tolbooth.
