About Me'Clutha Art Glass' was produced by the firm of James Couper & Sons in Glasgow from about 1888. This vase is marked with the initials of the industrial designer, Christopher Dresser and was retailed by Liberty & Co. of London.

Christopher Dresser, born Glasgow 1834-1904, is known as one of the first designers for industry.
The piece dates to the period following Dresser's four month visit to Japan, 1876-1877, which had a profound impact on his design aesthetic. Prior to the trip he was preoccupied with ornamentation, but on his return he rejected ornament and focussed on form. This stylistic departure resulted in designs that were minimalist and modern and perfectly suited to machine production.
