About MeThe artist has formed this vibrant sculpture by spiralling solid canes of hot glass around a blown glass base. This technique creates movement, as is the piece is literally spinning in place. Mishima draws inspiration from forms found in nature. Exploring the effects of light, she uses transparent, colourless glass to give the sensation of pureness and luminosity. 'Spin' captures and releases light and colour to create harmony within the context it is viewed.
With an absence of a glass tradition in Japan, Mishima moved to Venice in 1989, and by 1996, she had become dedicated to working with glass. Since then she has worked in collaboration with Murano glassmakers to create her pieces. She shares their preoccupation with the effect of light on the surrounding environment.
More About Me
Ritsue Mishima strives to keep the traditional Murano artisanship of glassblowing alive. In the eighteenth century, glassblowing was considered so coveted a skill that glassblowers were forbidden from leaving Murano!
