About MeFolded card designed by Ian Hamilton Finlay and Nicholas Sloan, printed by the Wild Hawthorn Press. The back is dated Christmas 2003 and the front has a printed image of Rousseau's tomb in the garden at Little Sparta plus a caption. It was sent by the artist in an envelope addressed to Joyce Laing, postmarked 19 Dec 2003 ("from Ian" is handwritten inside). Inserted within the card are nine copies of a small print entitled "Ex Libres" bearing the image of trees and a tomb with the heading "Superior gardens are composed of Glooms & Solitudes and not of plants & trees" printed above. This work is part of an archive that belonged to Joyce Laing, OBE. The artist, Ian Hamilton Finlay, was a personal friend and sent her an example of each new poem print and multiple as it was made.
More About Me
Finlay's interest in the interplay of verbal and visual language can produce unexpected word combinations and suggest hidden meanings.
