"age 58 years, sex male, colour white, complexion ruddy, colour of eyes grey, colour of hair grey, height 5 feet 11 inches, weight 182 pounds, visible distinctive marks none, marital status married, former nationality British."

The certificate is dated 12 August 1942, signed by McBey and George Brodbeck, Clerk of the US District Court, and includes a signed photograph of McBey. The document has been stamped on the reverse by the New York Passport Agency with a stamp that reads: "Passport applied for Sep 24 1945 Passport Agency, New York."

This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this certificate.
