About MeBlack and white photograph depicting a group of troops standing in formation, while one makes a speech to townspeople, in Jerusalem. This event occurred shortly after troops, led by General Edmund Allenby, marched into Jerusalem on foot, through the Jaffa Gate, on 11 December 1917. On this date the city had just been secured by the British Empire after the Battle of Jerusalem, or Jerusalem Operations, which began on 17 November 1917. During this time James McBey was Official War Artist in Egypt, having begun his service on 26 May 1917. The photograph is kept within a hardback photograph album, with faux leather overlay, along with a series of other related images.
This object is part of an archive that belonged to Marguerite McBey. As a result of her generosity, Aberdeen Art Gallery holds the largest archive of James McBey's work, including prints, drawings, sketchbooks, oil paintings and memorabilia such as this photograph.
