About MeJames Cowie was closely associated with North East Scotland. He was born and educated in Aberdeenshire and as Head of Painting at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and Warden of Hopitalfield Arbroath, he became an influential art educator in Scotland.

This vigorous drawing was executed in 1932, during the years when he was art master at Belshill Academy. The subject, 'A Pretty Lady', is known in two drawings and was also worked up into an oil painting which was lost during the War years.
