General History:
02/02/1831:
We regret to state that the sloop BESS, of and from this port, George Hayes, master, struck on the sand bank called the Horseshoe, near Wicklow Head, and soon after went down. The crew fortunately saved themselves in the boat. The cargo, consisting of barley, consigned to an eminent house in Belfast was, we hear, insured, but the vessel, it appears, was not. The BESS was about 80 tons burden. [report from Wexford Herald]
(Waterford Mail)
Note: first in Lloyd's 1820, the old ship being insured for the first time was probably due to the new keel and large repairs in 1816 that Lloyd's notes, BESS was also almost rebuilt 1825.
