Although from the beginning of the First World War women’s fashions had become looser and more practical, around 1915 an optimistic fashion emerged based on the Victorian crinoline, which quickly became known as the ‘war crinoline’. Although fabric and haberdashery were not rationed during the conflict, some things were in short supply. For the ordinary woman the style was translated into a rather generously cut skirt, but not always as large as French or British couture versions.
This particular suit was worn at a local wedding. Although it is in a sombre colour it would have been very practical, as it could be worn for best, on several other occasions.
