About MeFrith's moral tale of good conquering evil was exactly the kind of painting that the Victorians admired, especially with its elements of humour and hypocracy. The scene is set in a mid 18th century stagecoach. A swarthy Dick Turpin-like character has held up the coach and is demanding money from the passengers. With terrified expressions, the coach party - including an elaborately uniformed officer - hand over their valuables, whilst opposite him a young clergyman reaches under his seat for his gun.

Meanwhile, in the distance, a body hanging from gallows reveals the final outcome of the tale; justice prevails and the highwayman will receive his punishment.
A larger version of this painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1848.
