About MeZoffany settled in England in 1760 and made his name painting 'conversation pieces', in which a group of people are portrayed less formally than in earlier ages, engaged in conversation, playing musical instruments or reading letters.

Robert Morse is shown playing the 'cello; his sisters Anne Francis and Sarah are seated at the harpsichord and Sarah's husband, William Cator, stands on the right. Robert Morse was Advocate of the Supreme Court and Sheriff of Calcutta in 1783-4. This picture was painted in India, although the formal trappings of the setting are conventionally British. The fine costumes and elegant interior reveal an age of gracious living.

More About Me
A domestic scene which took place in India, where the family lived, though you couldn’t guess it from the picture with its conventionally British trappings.
