About MeIsraels is considered the master of the modern Dutch School which revitalised Dutch art in the 19th century. Ill health caused the artist to move to Scheveningen, a small fishing village near Haarlem. Here Israels observed the local people and gradually the focus of his art moved from traditional historical subjects to the lives of the poor community around him.

Israels felt that everyday subjects were as poetic and heroic as historical ones although sometimes, as here, his art was more sentimental than heroic.
