About MeNever above making a joke at his own expense, Fleming once claimed that he has painted every harbour from Leven to Ardersier. He paints Gourdon from a vantage point high on the road which snakes down to the village. This bird's eye view gives emphasis to the geometry of harbour and buildings. The hillside throws much of the village into shadow, draining the colour from the warm sandstone. In sharp contrast, the low evening sun picks out the west facing walls of the buildings nearest the sea.

Ian Fleming was born and educated in Glasgow. He was a student at Glasgow School of Art and was later appointed to the teaching staff. He also taught at Hospitalfield, Arbroath, before coming to Aberdeen in 1954. He was Principal of Gray's School of Art until his retirement in 1972.
