About MeDuring the First World War, Grant and Vanessa Bell set up home in Charleston, Sussex. The huge ten-bedroomed ramshackle house stood beside a pond. Here Grant and Bell worked alongside each other: Grant often painting the surrounding landscape, as he can be seen here, whilst Bell painted interior settings. After his earlier exploration of abstraction, in the 1920's Grant resumed a careful observation of nature in his art.
More About Me
This idyllic setting was home to conscientious objectors during the First World War. The artist Duncan Grant lived here with Vanessa Bell, sister of writer Virginia Woolf.
